Today the company in charge of administering the .co domain (www.cointernet.co) announced a tentative schedule for the launch of the dot co domain, so it is open for .co domain registration.
Apparently the way this is going to work is that, at the beginning .co domain registration will be open only to trademark holders and companies that have ownership over a brand name and want to reserve the corresponding version under the .co domain, later on a “Land Rush” for high value domain names where these .co domains will be sold at a premium, and finally around mid 2010 it will be open to anyone.
This is a great strategy in which the administration company maximizes its revenue potential for dot co domain registrations, while at the same time saving themselves of law suits from recognizable brands and companies with trademark ownership over certain names that could be registered under the .co domain.
The new year usually comes with new plans, promises and resolutions… and this time 2010 also comes with many expectations for the .co domain which many see as the new .com.
Currently the .com TLD is overcrowded, even many domains are taken but unused since there are certain companies or individuals who bought and hoarded .com domain names with the hope of being the next buy.com or pets.com which were sold for huge amounts of money. But now the .co TLD comes to re-freshen the domain name scene with new opportunities for startups to register domain names that actually mean something, no more making up names by removing vowels or cryptic domain names that you have to spell out every time you mention it.
We really hope that the world will start registering .co domains en masse in 2010. And if you are one of those, we really hope you do register your .co domain with us. We will keep you posted!
