What are .co domains?

.CO domains are two-letter internet domains. They have been used as either the country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) for Colombia (“example.com.co”, “example.org.co”, “example.gov.co”) or as Second Level Domains combined with other country code Top Level Domains (“example.co.uk”, “example.co.jp”, “example.co.nz”). Since 2010, however, .CO domains will be enabled for use as Top Level Domains (“example.co”) and will be available for any individual or organization worldwide.

I have had a .CO Domain for a while. It’s “mycompany.com.co”. What’s the big news?

You have had a .CO domain attached to another Top Level Domain (in this case, “.COM”). The news is that you can now have a .CO domain without the need of any other domain, so your url is shorter and easier to remember, like “yourcompany.co”. How come I had never heard of .CO domains?

.CO domains had not been popular worldwide because before 2010 they could only be used as Top Level Domains by Colombian organizations and were not hugely promoted outside of that country. From June 2010, however, they will be enabled for use as Top Level Domains worldwide.

Who can register .CO domains?

Anyone in the world can register .CO domains. However, you have to keep in mind the key dates from when you can register .CO domains depending on your case.

What are the advantages of registering .CO domains?

• .CO domains can stand for “company”, “corporation” and “commercial” among other uses.
• .CO domains began being available worldwide in 2010. This means that, unlike .COM domains, .CO domains are not still widely popularized and a vast number of easy-to-remember simple names are still available*.
• .CO domains are shorter!
